Caribbean, Leeward Islands Sample Itinerary

St. Maarten to St. Maarten

Caribbean Reef Colorful cultures, vibrant sea life, sizzling nightlife!

The Leeward Islands are a constant surprise, no matter how many times you've visited their shores and admired their clear waters. You can preview their attractions in a week; it would take a season to feel you've really seen them all. These are the islands you dream about in northern climates during the long winter months, teasing you with the caress of warm tradewinds carrying the scent of jasmine and the promise of indolence.

Saint Martin/Sint Maarten is unique, half French and half Dutch, with each side having the distinct flavor of that country. From landlock Simpson Bay, you can enjoy an exuberant nightlife and sample the many casinos. This is the Las Vegas of the Caribbean.

On the other hand, there is quiet Anguilla, a sleepy, sandy strip of fabulous beaches (33 in 35 miles of coastline) and fish-filled reefs.

Saba is other-worldly, a rocky pinnacle to explore.

St. Barth's is ever-so-chic from its throbbing nightclubs to the waterfront lined with boutiques from Paris and London. This is where you'll see and be seen, either aboard your yacht at the quay in Gustavia or in one of the celebrity-filled restaurants. Jet-set modern to laid-back island style, you'll find it all in the Leeward Islands.

Day 1, St. Maarten, 10 nm - Depart for a short trip to Anguilla, a long, lean, sandy island. En route, stop at Prickly Pear Cays, perfect little islets for swimming and acclimating to "island time, mon." Overnight in Crocus Bay.

Day 2, Anguilla - Go ashore to visit Loblolly Gallery, a consortium of local artists and then enjoy the underwater national park that's perfect for snorkeling. Circle the island and stop by Rendezvous Bay to visit Bankie Banx's beachfront bar. His buddy, Jimmy Buffet, might just be jamming with Bankie. Overnight in Road Bay.

Day 3, Saba, 38 nm - Forgotten by time, this dramatic island rises straight from the sea with forbidding walls of sheer rock, but its tiny villages are filled with friendly and gentle Sabans. The Saba Marine Park is second-to-none for underwater scenery and, ooh, that night sky.

Day 4, St. Barth's, 31 nm - Moor stern-to on the Gustavia quay and stroll the town, or rent a Smart Car. Visit trendy Nikki Beach for a swim or have a leisurely lunch at Hotel Eden Roc. Later, cocktails at Hotel Carl Gustav overlooking the lighted harbor at dusk are a must. Dining on the aft deck is appealing, but so are the fabulous restaurants on every corner. Ah, such decisions.

Day 5, Anse Colombier, 4 nm - Depart early for this idyllic bay, where you'll see tortoises, dolphin and even lobster (if not on the bottom, then certainly on your table). Ride the water toys until you have had your fill, then it's back to Gustavia for more shopping, dining and dancing.

Day 6, St. Marten, 15 nm - Leave late for the short cruise across to Dutch Sint Maarten, where you might want to enjoy a spa experience at one of the many luxury resorts.

Day 7, St. Maarten - Your crew will deliver you by tender to nearby Queen Juliana international airport.
